1. Open Microsoft Excel


2. Choose “New” from the “File” menu or use the shortcut button


3. In cell A1 enter the words “Social Roles” and press enter twice.


4. In cell A3 enter the word “group”, press the tab key, enter the words “hours per day”, press the tab key, enter the words “percent of the day (%)”,press the tab key, enter the words “section of the circle (°)” and hit enter


4a. to get the degree symbol °, hold down the ALT key and, using the keypad, type 0176, then let go of the ALT key.


5. You will notice that the words you just typed all run together, so using the mouse, click on the “3” on the left side of the screen. The entire row will be highlighted.


6. While it is still highlighted, click the right mouse button and a menu should appear. Choose “Format Cells” from the list.

7. This is what you will see, choose the “alignment” tab. Then, check off the box that says “Wrap text” and in the “Vertical” box, choose “center” from the pulldown menu.


8. Then choose the “Font” tab and set the font to size 8. Finally, click “OK”.


9. Right click again (while the row is still highlighted) and choose “Row Height”, set it to 30 and then click “OK”.


10. In cell A4, type “citizen”, press enter, and then continue to type the rest of the social roles, 1 per cell. You should have the last social group listed in cell A9.


11. Go back up to cell B4 and begin to enter the hours per day that you spend in each activity.


12. Go to cell B10. You are now going to write your first formula. In the cell, type =sum( then take the mouse, put it over cell B4, hold the left button down and drag it down to cell B9. Then type “)”. Finally, press enter, and your total should appear.


13. Go to cell C4. You are now going to write your second formula. In the cell, type =( then click on cell B4. Type “/” this means divide by and then click on cell B10and type “)”. Finally press enter. You should see a decimal number.


14. Go to cell C5 and repeat the process, except you will substitute B4 with B5, but you will still divide by B10. You will repeat these steps all the way to cell C9.


15. When you get to cell C10, click on cell C9. A dark black box will appear around it. If you carefully move the mouse to the lower right-hand corner, the pointer will turn into a small black cross. When this happens, press the left mouse button and drag it over to cell C10. Then hit enter. If everything is all right, the number “1” will appear.


16. Go to cell D4. You are going to write your last formula. In this cell, type =( then click on cell C4, type “*” this means multiplied by and then type “360)” and hit enter.


17. Go back up to cell D4, move the pointer to the corner, wait for it to turn to a black cross, then drag it to cell D9. Then hit enter. The number of degrees for each value should appear.

18. Finally, go to cell C10, click on it and then drag it to cell D10. Then hit enter, if everything is all right, the number “360” will appear.
